Description

This barred spiral galaxy is located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -23 degrees.  It is a visual magnitude 11 galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.  We are seeing this galaxy about 30 degrees from edge-on.

The galaxy disk appears quite disturbed, with disjointed arms, scattered blue star cloud regions, and a core which is offset slight to the upper left.

3 other distant galaxies are seen in close proximity.  Just to the left of the core is a background yellow face-on lenticular galaxy which is peaking through the disk of NGC 578.  This galaxy is LEDA 133775 and is 0.5 billion light years away.

The other 2 distant galaxies are seen just outside of the NGC 578 disk at right and at lower right.
